Our goal at Southern Health-Santé Sud is to provide a supportive, collaborative learning environment for incoming students, residents and new graduates. We offer a wide range of learning opportunities to help ease your transition.

In partnership with Health Careers Manitoba, the region is pleased to participate and coordinate the ‘Home for the Summer’ program with support from clinics, facilities and communities. The program offers summer employment to post-secondary medical students providing hands-on experience both in the hospital environment and with patient interactions. This is a great opportunity to learn more about communities in the region, work alongside trained health care providers and enhance knowledge and skills in the area of study. To be eligible for the program, you must originate from the region or have a connection to the region and be currently enrolled in a health care training program that is a future need for the region.

Residency for Family Medicine

Southern Health-Santé Sud welcomes medical residents to any of its five Clinical Teaching Units located in the communities of Morden/Winkler, Notre Dame de Lourdes, Portage la Prairie, Ste. Anne and Steinbach. As a designated bilingual Service Delivery Organization, we are pleased to provide a bilingual (English/French) residency program that offers medical residents the opportunity to experience practice within two francophone towns of Ste. Anne and Notre Dame de Lourdes. For more information about Residency for Family Medicine, visit the Canadian Resident Matching Service, a national, independent, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides a fair, objective and transparent application and matching service for medical training throughout Canada.

Return of Service Agreement for Medical Students

Interested in pursuing your career in rural Manitoba? We invite you to connect with our Medical Administration Office regarding financial incentives available to medical students, residents and physicians. These types of financial incentives include a Return of Service Agreement.

Rural Week for Medical Students

For all first year medical students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, Rural Week provides hands on experience and exposure to rural medicine and rural life. Various placements are arranged in the communities, clinics and facilities within the region. Students also have an opportunity to visit local schools to promote and encourage students to consider a career in medicine – rural medicine in particular.
