Discover Health Careers Manitoba Program (formerly Home for the Summer)

In partnership with Health Careers Manitoba, the region is pleased to participate and coordinate the Discover Health Careers Manitoba program in our area with support from clinics, facilities and communities. The program offers summer employment to post-secondary medical students providing hands-on experience both in the hospital environment and with patient interactions. This is a great opportunity to learn more about communities in the region, work alongside trained health care providers and enhance knowledge and skills in the area of study. To be eligible for the program, you must originate from the region or have a connection to the region and be currently enrolled in a health care training program that is a future need for the region.

Students are requested to forward the following details:

  • Student name, contact information and area of study (health program student is currently enrolled in)
  • Program length and anticipated year of graduation
  • Where is the training location (Institution, City/Province)?
  • Hometown
  • Date you are able to begin summer work
  • Salary Expectation

Mentorship Program

As a new nurse, we offer a Mentorship Program in the hopes that it increases your chances for success and assists you in your integration to the health care industry. This program, offered to each newly-hired graduate nurse, is a voluntary, mutually beneficial and long term relationship. Benefits of this program include:

Nurses Recruitment and Retention Fund Grant

The Nurses Recruitment and Retention Fund assists with the recruitment and retention of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Registered Psychiatric Nurses in Manitoba. Learn more about the following grant options:

Practicum Opportunities

We welcome students and apprentices in all areas of study to complete their student practicum and placement within the region. We are committed to providing each student and health service provider with an opportunity to gain valuable clinical and work experience in a health care related career and to help them achieve their goals. Contact your Education Institution Student Services Coordinator to arrange for a student practicum placement in one of our sites.

Student Incentive Grant

Are you currently enrolled in an approved post-secondary health care studies program, and in your final year of studies in one of the following healthcare occupations? If yes, you may be eligible for Southern Health-Santé Sud’s Student Incentive Grant of up to $4,000!

  • Nursing: Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Nurse Practitioners
  • Midwife
  • Pharmacist
  • Rehabilitation Services: Audiologist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Language Pathologist, Respiratory Therapist

If you are completing your final year of studies in one of the above programs, you are invited to apply for the Student Incentive Grant. Applications must be submitted prior to your date of convocation. Applications will be reviewed by the Recruitment and Retention Team for determination.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • confirmed employment as a direct caregiver in a permanent or term position within Southern Health-Santé Sud, within a 0.4 EFT or higher EFT
  • acceptance of and compliance with the conditions of a return of service commitment with Southern Health-Santé Sud for eight (8) months
