As the holiday season approaches, many of our thoughts shift to our humanitarian heartstrings, with the intent of being kind and generous. We start thinking about what gifts to give others – whether gestures of giving, gifts of time or acts of kindness.
Acts of kindness benefit both the giver and receiver. Helping others also brings about positive changes in the brain that are associated with happiness. Positive emotions are known to:
- help reduce stress
- boost our immune system
- decrease anger and aggression
- expand our social network
- bring an increased sense of belonging
Acts of kindness are contagious and “paying it forward” can go a long way.
This Season, try finding alternatives to spending money on gifts. Rather… Call a friend. Make someone laugh. Praise someone for a job well done. And the list continues…
Indeed, simple acts of kindness can brighten someone’s day or make a difference in their life. What a wonderful thought to create a culture so contagious that we become motivated to share acts of kindness, creating feelings and memories that are both cherished and timeless throughout the year.
